Taking Sides

A Process Work Evening with Polarisation

with Grzegorz Zielinski

You want to go for a walk. You also want to lie on the couch.

You consider yourself easy-going, and then you leave a dinner with a friend feeling irritated, envious, or just quietly flat. Where did that come from?

Lately, I spent months unable to buy a desk chair. Not because I couldn't afford one, but because investing seriously in a desk chair would mean finally admitting I'm someone who sits at a desk a lot. And I've always thought of myself as a mover, an outdoors person, someone close to nature. The chair was just a chair. Except it wasn't.

These aren't big, dramatic crises. This is everyday life. Two pulls in opposite directions. Two versions of yourself that don't quite fit together.

Carl Jung observed that polarity is the basic nature of the psyche. Not a malfunction but rather a feature. The Yin Yang symbol has been saying the same thing for thousands of years. Culture keeps returning to this in mythology, literature, and art.

What I find Process Work adds is something practical: a way of moving through your polarities rather than just being moved by them.

Arnold Mindell mapped out stages of how we relate to conflict and polarisation, from not seeing it at all, to being completely captured by one side, to something he calls the Elder quality: a genuine ability to appreciate both sides, and what lives between them. These aren't steps on a ladder. They're more like weather you keep meeting. You'll visit all of them, probably more than once, sometimes even in a single day.

I'd like to invite you to bring a real polarisation from your own life. Something you're currently stuck in, pulled between, or quietly avoiding. Through Process Work exercises, we'll feel both sides from the inside, move between them, and discover what opens up when you're no longer fixed on just one.

No experience with Process Work needed.

Friday, 19th of Jun, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Hotham Room in North Melbourne Library.

PAST SESSIONS IN 2025

FEB: Psychology, movement and nature - playing at the intersections

with Martin Hamsley and Grzegorz Zielinski

Hey there! Ever wondered about that quote from Arnold Mindell where he says, "Within what we call problems are paths we haven't yet explored"? We love it because it captures something magical about Process Work that we've discovered through our own experiences.

You know how sometimes life throws you curveballs or you get stuck with something that feels like a problem? Well, what if those very things are actually pointing you towards paths, you haven't noticed yet? That's what we're excited to explore with you in our first Process Work Play workshop.

Here's the thing - we're both big nature lovers and walking enthusiasts, and we've found something incredible in Mindell's approach that brings together psychological exploration with the simple act of walking and feeling connected to the earth. There's something about paying attention to directions and movement that can shed new light on all sorts of situations - whether it's that tricky relationship issue you're dealing with, a challenge at work, or even that weird dream you had last night.

Want to try something different? Come walk these unexplored paths with us (both literally and metaphorically!). We'll explore how bringing together psychology, movement, and nature can open up new ways of looking at your everyday experiences.

APR: How to Hack Your Governor Module

A Process Oriented Psychology Workshop Inspired by ‘The Murderbot Diaries’

with Martin Hamsley and Grzegorz Zielinski

Are you truly the captain of your own (space) ship? Or is something else—hidden, unacknowledged, powerful—steering your course?

Murderbot, the reluctant hero of Martha Wells' famous sci-fi series, hacked its governor module to free itself from coercive control by its multiplanetary corporate owners. Yet this self-liberation led to unexpected questions about identity, purpose, and connection—questions that mirror our human journey.

Grzesiek and Martin have been gnawing on this intriguing metaphor, wondering how it might throw light on the forces driving our lives. Join us in entering deeply into this fundamental inquiry at the heart of our sentience, being informed also by:

  • Arnold Mindell's process work revealing how our "bigger you" communicates through dreams, body symptoms, and relationships
  • Freud's ideas about the unconscious and the ego-id-superego dance
  • Jung's collective unconscious and archetypes pulling our strings
  • Eastern philosophical traditions pointing to the illusory nature of the self
  • Neuropsychological research bridging modern science with psychoanalytic insights

Interactive Discussion Component: We invite you to bring your voice and experiences to the table. Through guided group discussion and reflective exercises, we'll collectively examine questions such as:

  • Is complete conscious control desirable, or is there wisdom in the unconscious?
  • What might a healthy relationship between conscious and unconscious aspects look like?
  • The double signals in our dreams, body symptoms, and relationships
  • How neuropsychology research explores the tension between conscious awareness and unconscious drivers
  • How your understanding of self-awareness has evolved through life
  • Different cultural and personal models of psychological growth
  • What "hacking your governor module" might look like in your unique life
  • Let’s also keep at the back of our minds the influence of the ancient wisdom of Taoist and Buddhist perspectives on consciousness

Come explore what your personal "governor module" might be—and discover tools to hack it, embracing both the wisdom of your unconscious processes and the power of conscious choice in this collaborative learning environment.

MAY: Process Work Play - the Fashion Edition!

-with Liz Scarfe and Grzegorz Zielinski

In Western culture, there are two broad narratives about clothes. One, they are hugely important communication devices. The other, they’re superficial and don’t matter.

How is anyone supposed to get dressed with such conflicting messages?!

Join Grzegorz Zielinski and Liz Scarfe, your process oriented fashion consultants, for a quirky evening of taking clothes psycho-seriously as vehicles of being, becoming, and belonging.

Taking a process-oriented lens to clothing opens a space to consider the role of clothes in expressing and facilitating processes of identity, change, belonging, and conflict.

Get answers to some of the big questions:
- Why do some of the clothes I really like just not ‘feel’ like me?
- What’s happening when I impulsively buy clothes that I later never wear?
- Why do I hold onto clothes I know I’ll never wear again?
- Why do I like what I like?
- What does my ‘style’ reveal about my process?
- What am I ‘not allowed’ to wear?
- What’s going on when I feel like I have ‘nothing to wear’?

June: Where Roles Dance - the Art and Science of Group Process Work

-with Bec Lang and Grzegorz Zielinski

Ever wonder why we feel powerless in some groups while others liberate us from our everyday identity?

This interactive workshop explores these questions through process oriented psychology and hands-on role playing.

Dive deep into the concept that “role is more than one person; one person is more than a role”, while discovering how group processes fundamentally differ from individual work. Learn to shift from individual thinking to group consciousness.

Through playful techniques including visual symbols and structured exercises, you’ll understand the crucial differences between individual and group processes and learn how to make invisible group dynamics visible and workable.

Perfect for counsellors, facilitators, and anyone seeking to understand collective processes, this workshop bridges the gap between individual narratives and group wisdom, offering practical tools for navigating the complex tensions between personal and collective processes.

July: Danced by the Field: Moving What Feels Unmovable

-with Beck Ronkson and Grzegorz Zielinski

Before action, some traditions dance. They become what they seek, calling it forward through embodied ritual. What if we did the same with our modern struggles?

Bring a challenge you’re grappling with - a stuck dynamic, a looping thought, a task you never quite feel ready for. Together, we’ll enter a shared ritual space where movement, imagination, and the dreaming field converge. You’ll get to be your challenge, dream it, play it, and hand it over to the collective body. Let others move it. Let it move through you.

In this creative, process-oriented workshop, you’ll experience the power of being moved by the field and moving for others. As we give shape to each other’s struggles, unexpected wisdom emerges. By the end, you’ll return to your challenge with new energy, clarity, and direction.

No dance experience needed - just curiosity, openness, and a willingness to move.

August: Walking Memory: Embodied Journeys Through Life's Landscapes

-with Bec Lang and Grzegorz Zielinski

Journey through the landscapes of your life in this immersive workshop that combines creative visualisation, vector walking, and Process Oriented Psychology.

Every significant moment in our lives is anchored to a place - the park bench where decisions were made, the building where dreams began, the street where childhood unfolded. Through both imaginative travel and embodied movement, we'll explore how these personal landmarks hold wisdom and perspective for current life situations. Drawing on Arnold Mindell's vector walking practice, we'll use our bodies as compasses, allowing physical movement to guide us through inner landscapes and reveal unexpected directions.

This experiential session helps you become both an explorer and a cartographer of your own story, discovering how the places that shaped you—accessed through imagination and movement—can illuminate the path forward and reveal insights about who you're becoming.
